76 years ago today the Battle of Leyte Gulf was drawing to a close. The Japanese Navy would never be a serous threat again after this, the largest naval battle of the war. DO you know some of the ships that took part?
Gorgeous photo of a gorgeous airplane... sometimes that's all you need, right?

It was #OTD in 1947 that the first flight of the Grumman HU-16 Albatross occurred. The Albatross was one of the first new aircraft the fly solely with the new "Star and Bar" roundel of the US which was adopted in September of 1947. The amphibian design was used by the US Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard, primarily as a search and rescue aircraft. Over 400 were built between 1947 and 1961. Have you ever seen one up close?
Here's a #FlashbackFriday from last year's Wings Over Dallas airshow that also fits for a #FighterFriday! Can you name this cool cat? Mark Naumann

We love meeting veterans of all types, but especially pilots who flew birds in our fleet. Another reason #WhyWeFly. How about a "thank you" for his service?
Earlier this week we talked about the Curtiss Sparrowhawk's test program as a parasite fighter with an airship mothercraft in the 30s, and some of you mentioned the good old McDonnell XF-85 Goblin's similar test program with the B-29 Superfortress. So we thought it would interest you to know that #OTD in 1948, on the fifth flight of the Goblin's second prototype, the XF-85 successfully unhooked from the EB-29B Superfortress mothership "Monstro", and for the first time retract...ed the small fighter's nose hook in flight. Unfortunately, when McDonnell test pilot Edwin Schoch extended the hook to reconnect with the mothership, buffeting over the open nose hook well made the Goblin too unstable for reconnection. The hook was broken after multiple attempts, and Schoch had to belly-land on the dry lake at Muroc Air Force Base. Do you know why he had to belly-land?
It's nice to see the CAF Ground Forces Detachment out and about! What's your favorite WWII land vehicle? https://www.facebook.com/CAFgroundforces/posts/4538890436182104
