HELP WANTED: Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna the Malta Heritage Trust is currently set at reconstructing the missing upper part and the ballustraded enclosure of the ...Colonel Henry Anderson-Morshead R.E. memorial at the Saluting Battery in Valletta after being left in a deplorable state for over fifty years. The upper part of the monument was dismantled and supposedly stored away by government workers in the late 1960s. For this purpose, FWA is seeking the assistance of the public to help it find the missing pieces if they still exist and also to determine from lithographs, photographs and paintings featuring this monument the details of the relief ornamentation present at either of its narrow extremes. Colonel Henry Anderson-Morshead was the Chief Royal Engineer and Acting Governor to Major-General Frederick Ponsomby, Governor of Malta (1827-36), between 1829 and 1831. Before arriving in Malta he had a long and successful carrier as a military engineer divided between home, the continent and the colonies. He was a close and trusted friend of Sir Thomas Maitland Governor of Malta and the Ionian Islands who is buried at the Upper Barracca. Anderson-Morshead died in Valletta on 11th November 1831, aged 57 and was buried at the Saluting Battery in Valletta following a military funeral at the expense of the state. Anyone wishing to help in this project by sending copies of visual depictions of the Anderson-Morshead memorial or perhaps has information about the location of the missing upper part is advised to contact FWA on this email address: [email protected] Thank you for your help. Please share this post.

DONATION OF CANNON BALL - Mr David Michael Schembri Mayor of Qrendi has kindly donated to Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna and old iron cannon ball for display at one of ...its military museums. The Cannon ball in question is solid, measures about 6 inches and is probably a 24 pounder one. This example was found at the bottom of a well in Qrendi. FWA has over the years assembled an impressive collection of original artillery ammunition, instruments and implements not to mention original artillery pieces. The donated cannon ball will be joining this collection where it can be enjoyed by those visiting Fort Rinella in Kalkara or the Saluting Battery in Valletta. David is a keen supporter of FWA since it beginning and he is himself very interested in matters of heritage and history. Since becoming the mayor of Qrendi he has done his best to restore local historical relics some of which completely overlooked for their importance such as miles stone and military road directional pillars.
