Today’s Valentine card has a simple sentiment behind a lusciously sweet cover. I think that both the cover and the inside verse could framed individually but so like many a Valentine’s couple, they stand together well. #lombardhistory #preserveinterpretpromote #valentinescards #museum

This week we’ll be featuring some of the Valentines cards in our collection. Today’s card has a pretty illustration on the front and a sugary verse on the inside but that wasn’t always the case. During the Victorian era, a person might send a vinegar Valentine to tell a would-be sweetheart their feelings weren’t reciprocated. Luckily, this isn’t one of those. #lombardhistory #preserveinterpretpromote #victorianvalentine #museum

Today is the big football game, #55, which technically can’t be referred to by its known name because of trademarks & copyrights. But young John Castleman, a Peck descendant through Abigail Peck Castleman’s line, looks ready to play. Although, I think that football is about as big as he is. The photo was taken in the 1920s. #footballgames #football #lombardhistory #preserveinterpretpromote #museum

Merry Christmas from the Lombard Historical Society! Join us for our final Harriet for the Holidays, as we listen to Harriet Peck read A Visit from St. Nick. As we get ready to slumber and see visions of sugar plums dance in our heads, the final words of the poem say it best. The Home Acres depot for the Chicago, Aurora, & Elgin Railroad at Westmore-Meyers Road, circa 1912, looking east towards Villa Park. The big house just behind the depot belonged to Dr. T. Franklin James, who eventually moved to 135 S. Main Street. Home Acres, renamed Westmore, was an unincorporated neighborhood that voted to join Lombard in 1926. #lombardhistory #preserveinterpretpromote #museum #railroad

Parkside Theatre was Lombard’s first moving pictures place. It stood on Parkside Avenue just west of Main Street. The theatre was built in the 19teens and was active until DuPage Theatre, with talking pictures, was built. Parkside Theatre was abandoned, fell into disrepair, and was eventually demolished. #lombardhistory #museum #silentpictures #theatres

Today we pause to recognize that Native Americans #indigenouspeoplesday are the first inhabitants of the present-day United States. Today, over 5 million Indigenous people in the United States carry on their cultural and traditions. The Lombard Historical Society is located on what was the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi Tribes' traditional lands. Thank you Illinois State Museum for sharing this interactive map http://usg.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html which ...was created by historian Claudio Saunt to visualize the dispossession after 1776 of 1.2 billion acres of Native land by an expanding American empire. We invite you to learn about the Indigenous people who once lived and continue to live in the places you call home. Featured are two maps the first is from our collection dated 1862 when Lombard was known as Babcock’s Grove and the second shows the Chicagoland before 1850. #lombard_history #museum #nativeamerican #maps

Three members of the Lombard Fire Department place a placard on a fire hydrant near Village Hall on North Park Avenue, reminding the public to not give a fire a chance. In the second photo, Arl Tonne of the Lombard Fire Department is placing a card marked I for Invalid on a Lombardian’s home. These cards notify the Fire Department that someone who lives there needs assistance in case of a fire. In present days, Lombardians can talk to the Fire Marshal about installing a Knox Box near their main entrance of their home. The Knox Box contains a key to their home that first responders can access in case of an emergency. These special boxes are used for businesses as well as residences. #fireperventionweek #firedepartment #lombard_history #museum @villageoflombard

The photo of the engine, imprinted with Grace Lodge VFD, belonged to another Lombard area fire department. According to their department history, two Lombard subdivisions (Lombard Vista & Countryside Farmettes) formed two separate fire departments just after World War II to protect their neighborhoods. The two departments were known as Lombard Vista Fire Department with their station at 456 N. Vista Avenue and the Grace Lodge Fire Department at 451 E. Prairie Avenue. When t...he two departments merged in the late 1940s, they renamed themselves Villard Fire Department and established their first station at 324 N. Edgewood Avenue. In 1958, they broke ground for a new fire station at 635 N. Parker Drive. As the Village of Lombard’s boundaries grew, the neighborhoods the Villard Fire Department served were absorbed into the Lombard Fire Department Territory. The end of watch for the Villard Fire Department came in the early 1970s. #fireperventionweek #firedepartment #lombard_history #museum
