Due to the continuing uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, and in order to ensure the safety of our visitors and staff we have made the decision to close the Museum for July and August. Our beautiful building is just too difficult to manage social distancing. A decision about September and October will be made nearer the time and information will be posted here and on our website cranbrookmuseum.org Archives will still be available on line for enquiries
While Cranbrook Museum remains closed to the public due to Covid-19, we have embarked on making a series of short videos for children on local history. The first of these is on The Great Fire of Cranbrook 1840 which you may have seen already- www.cranbrookmuseum.org/education.html (or see previous post) Watch this space for our second one which will be on Old Cranbrook Shops. Very excited about our Christmas meeting on Tuesday 10th December in the Congregational Church at 7.30 -Michael Withers (conductor of the Saturday Tempo Choir in Cranbrook) will be talking about and playing Medieval Musical instruments. As if that wasn't enough members will be able to collect their 2019 copy of the Cranbrook Journal, a brilliant edition full of original and fascinating local history. Plus festive refreshments! Visitors very welcome.
We are delighted with our certificate from Cranbrook in Bloom and proud to have been the hospitality location for their days of judgment!! Congratulations on fantastic 2019 achievements and thanks to all for making the town look so lovely this year. We look forward to lots of interaction again in 2020. Our second talk of the winter season is tonight in the Congregational Church, High Street at 7.30. The speaker, Peter Allen well known former deputy head of Cranbrook School, will be exploring the Horsleys of Cranbrook. While many of us know about JC Horsley, the painter and creator of the first ever Christmas card, his son was also eminent -but in the field of neurosurgery. Come and find out more! Visitors welcome.
The new season of evening meetings begins tomorrow evening with Simon Elliott giving a talk on Roman Kent. As usual, this will take place in the Congregational Church In the High Street, Cranbrook. Doors open at 7.00 for a 7.30 start. Refeshments available and visitors welcome.
Tuesday sees the opening of our last exhibition this year. It is being put on by The Wealden Iron Research Group and focuses on the Wealden Iron Industry from its earliest times to the 19th Century. It promises to be a fascinating insight into a key aspect of our past so do come and have a look during October. Don't forget we now only have a month left of the 2019 season.
Lullingstone Castle and World Garden was the destination for our outing last Thursday. An excellent guide gave us a thorough tour of the historical parts and then Tom Hart Dyke himself wowed us with a personal tour of the World Garden. As great great nephew of Cranbrook's famous explorer, Boyd Alexander, we are delighted that so many members of the Museum & History Society were able join us for a truly interesting and enjoyable afternoon.
