It is that time of the year again, our Annual Membership Drive. We are sending out letters to our current membership list but would like to encourage everyone to join our membership. Just give me a call at the Museum at 325-387-3754 or Elaine Donaldson at 325-226-3988 if you would like to join us in continuing to showcase the rich heritage of Sonora and Sutton County at the Ice House Ranch Museum, the Miers Home Museum and the Cauthorn Memorial Depot Building. We are... also supported by a small percentage of the Hotel Motel Tax, which has dropped significantly due to fewer people traveling and the oil business downturn. So therefore we need other funding to keep the Museums and Depot operating and would deeply appreciate your tax deductible donations. Maintaining these wonderful facilities in a small community like ours is a continuing challenge that we would be unable to meet without the generous financial and volunteer support of friends like you. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP LEVELS SUPPORTING $25 PATRON $50 SUSTAINING $100 GULLEY WASHER $500 DROUGHT BUSTER $1000 We are striving to keep the Museum open Wednesday through Friday afternoons and all day Saturday and would love to show you our wonderful exhibits, of which we have quite a few new ones.
We still have a few of our historic calendars for 2016. These calendars contain great pictures of early Sonora and residents.
We have some new exhibits that have just arrived in the museum. John and Dell Tedford have donated the first safe that was used by the First National Bank (now SonoraBank) when it opened in 1900 on North Main Street close to the Mercantile building. They also donated the safe that George Barrow used in his jewelry store when he owned it before the Tedford's purchased it from him. So come on in and visit and see all the new items in the gift shop.
From my corner at Water and Poplar I can see our historic courthouse looking over downtown Sonora. I can see a bit of the old historic jail on the other side of our fine courthouse. I can't see it from here but I know the Miers Home Museum on Oak St. is across from the old jail and next door to it is our Rock House Archive where the Sutton County Historical Society keeps the records and history of our town. The Sutton County Historical Society sees to it that I am ever impr...oving and changing. We get all kinds of folk coming in to look around and see what we are about. We usually get rave reviews and some of them are from folks who ought to know. We had a feller come in not long ago that takes pictures for "Southern Living" and "National Geographic" He said for a small town museum I was one of the best he had seen. Made me blush a little. Surely would like for you to come in for a visit and share a story or two and see a little of our history.
We have a new exhibit that we hope you will come in and see. It is called " Annexation: Celebrating Texas Statehood". ..Created by Humanities Texas it will be on display from March 20 - April 19, 2015. We are so proud to present these temporary exhibits in our museum that enhance public knowledge of our state, its history and our rich heritage.
Pardon our dust! Some badly needed renovations to our museum are scheduled for the near future. The old ice house which houses our museum was constructed in 1927 and needs a little help to keep going for another 88 years. We do not anticipate that the shoring up of our foundation or replacing sidewalks will interrupt our schedule so come on in for a tour or visit to our gift shop. The Sutton County Historical Society board is working hard to keep this local attraction, as well as The Miers Home Museum and the old Santa Fe Depot, also known as The John and Mildred Cauthorn Memorial Building in good repair.
Come on in and visit the Ice House Museum on your next trip to Sonora. We have some great exhibits and will have another special exhibit in the spring from the Texas Humanities traveling exhibits. We will post the date later. We are having a sale in the gift shop with discounts from 25% to 50 % store wide. The sale will end January 31st. We are making room for new items.
