BATTLE OF SARAGARHI Today is the day 21 Sikh soldiers sacrificed their lives in a defensive battle - the battle of Saragarhi. As a little preview of our virtual... event (10am via our Facebook page) we've created a detailed post on the Battle... On the 12th September 1897, 21 Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army defended the Saragarhi outpost in the hills of the North-West Frontier Province, now Pakistan against 10,000 Afghan tribesmen. Rather than surrender, the 21 Sikh soldiers fought to the death for nearly 10 hours with ammunition and bayonets. For their courage and selfless commitment, these Sikh warriors were posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit, the highest gallantry award at the time. Each year to commemorate these courageous acts the British Army holds a Saragarhi Day Event.
