This scene, painted before the Dundee to Perth railway opened in 1847, shows how close the natural coastline came to Magdalen yard road and ‘the Vine’. The railway was built on a causeway just offshore, cutting off access to the Tay. It turned parts of this area into a tidal lagoon which was eventually filled in and landscaped to create the modern park. #TimeAndTideThursday

One of the earliest known topographical views of the City, this work shows Dundee harbour before it was remodelled in 1770. Several ships are moored within the harbour, while another is at sail beyond the breakwater. #TimeAndTideThursday

Our exhibition Time & Tide looks at the influence the Tay has had on the city of Dundee, and how the growth of the city, particularly along the waterfront has affected the Tay, its wildlife and the people who live here. This photograph is from Zabat, a series in which artist Maud Sulter subverts the traditional representation of the classical muses. Sulter transforms the image with her choice of sitters, African clothes and non-European objects. Representing Clio, the muse of heroic poetry and history, is internationally renowned poet Dorothea Smartt. London-born of Barbadian parents, the portrait is a celebration of her Afro-Caribbean heritage. #BlackHistoryMonth Estate of Maud Sulter. All rights reserved, DACS 2020
