IMPORTANT UPDATE Following the recent government announcement, The National Justice Museum and City of Caves will now remain closed throughout December. However, fear not! While we do love having you visit us, we'd much rather wait until a time when it is easier and safer for you to do so. We’ve got lots of exciting things planned for 2021, and although you can’t join us on-site for the festive season this year, we’ve got some special seasonal treats in store...... We'll be following government guidance closely and will reassess our position in the near future, so make sure you follow us our page for regular updates. We look forward to seeing you again, but for now, take care and we'll see you soon! [: An external shot of the National Justice Museum in Nottingham]
On this day in 1759, William Andrew Horne was executed. He was arguably one of the worst criminals held at Nottingham County Gaol. When he was found, he shouted "damn the cock bag!" ... A cock bag is a bag for keeping cockerels in. Horne had used one to dispose of one of his victims. We'd like to say a huge thanks to Stephen, our Head Interpreter, for painting the incredible scene when Horne was discovered. Learn more about Horne's story here:
Well here's something you don't get to see often! This graffiti is located in the pits at our museum. These pits are inaccessible to the general public, but history interpreter Hannah managed to venture down into them earlier this week! We're going to share a video of the pits in the near future, but we hope you enjoy this taster for now!

Here at the National Justice Museum, we often get asked whether the graffiti down in the men's exercise yard is real. The answer? Yes! In fact, we've learned a lot about the graffiti in recent weeks... This graffiti belongs to William Peach. Peach was just 20 years old when he was found guilty for the theft of three handkerchiefs on the 5th of January 1835. He was sentenced to 14 years transportation in Van Diemens Land, later known as Tasmania. ... While this may seem harsh, William was a repeat offender, having already been imprisoned for theft aged eleven. When he was 15, he returned to prison on larceny charges. He then returned again when he turned 19. As prison wasn't rehabilitating Peach, he was finally transported. He was held aboard the prison hulk ‘Fortitude’ in Chatham from February 1835, but wasn’t transported until April that year when he was moved to the ‘Layton'. He started his voyage with 271 other convicts and eventually arrived in Tasmania 8 months later. There are many more untold stories down in the prison yard. Next time you visit, be sure to have a look - you'll be amazed what you find!
Blimey! Look at this picture, made by the ever-wonderful Stephen! This picture merges two photographs taken 120 years apart. On the left, we have a pub that used to sit at the top of Drury Hill...on the right, the street as it appears today! Drury Hill was once the main thoroughfare into Nottingham. However, the site was demolished to make way for the Broadmarsh shopping centre. ... While Drury Hill (and Broadmarsh, for the matter...) are no longer a part of the Nottingham cityscape, you can learn all about its history at the City of Caves!
