A WWII M-1 Garand bayonet with brass knuckles. This altered weapon was carried on D-Day by Thomas Mulhollad of he 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne. Mulholland was a parachute rigger. Parachute riggers packed and maintained parachutes and also equipment, they came up with creative alterations for equipment. Note the scabbard is also very altered and his name and service number on the friction tape. Here is a great examples of what a good rigger could do. A very interesting D-Day carried weapon. www.GettysburgMuseumOfHistory.com #DDayWWII #WWIIParaTrooper #GettysburgMuseumOfHistory

On exhibit at The Gettysburg Museum of History. A piece of the couch Adolf Hitler killed himself on, stained with his blood. The piece of the couch was taken by United States Army Colonel Roswell P. Rosengren, who served during most of the Second World War as Public Information Officer for General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. After Hitler’s suicide, Rosengren and a few fellow American officers were let into the infamous bunker by the Soviet forces, which controlled that portion of Berlin. Rosengren used the opportunity to take a section of the couch, along with a few other items from the bunker. An original WWII German Paratrooper Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger "gravity knife". This knife was captured by U.S. Paratrooper Richard Hoover from C Company 1/506 Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne. German Paratrooper "gravity knives" worked by releasing a lever on the side an allowing gravity to drop the blade out. This so a Paratrooper could operate it one handed if his lines were tangled during a jump or landing. The U.S. 101st Airborne trooper who captured it carved 'U.S." and the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagle head into the knife handle. His name is also scratched into the blade. The last photos are Dick Hoover. www.GettysburgMuseumOfHistory.com #101stAirborne #506PIR #GettysburgMuseumOfHistory #GermanGravityKnife

A relic of D-Day. On exhibit at The Gettysburg Museum of History. A WWII German Army uniform found at the Crisbecq Battery in Normandy France. This uniform was found in one of the bunkers that was blown up and sealed when the Americans captured the battery during the Normandy campaign. The bunker was excavated in the 1990's and made into a museum. This German stronghold was near Utah Beach. The U.S. 4th Division made several attempts to capture the stronghold. After a few days the remaining German troops abandoned the battery and the U.S 9th Division captured the battery on June 9. 1944. You can visit the Crisbecq Battery today as a museum. www.GettysburgMuseumOfHistory.com #CrisbecqBattery #DDay #GettysburgMuseumOfHistory

Happy Birthday to our friend Norwood Thomas! We are honored and humbled to be the caretaker of WWII Veteran Norwood Thomas' Purple Heart. Norwood Thomas was in Division Headquarters Artillery 101st Airborne. He is one of the few 101st troopers who made a combat parachute jump in Normandy and a combat glider landing at Holland. He was wounded during the battle of the bulge. After leaving the Army at the end of WWII he re-enlisted in the 1959 and retired in 1975. Shown here is ...his Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle Of The Bulge, Part of his D-Day parachute, his WWII prayer book, and his postwar I.D. In 2015 we traveled with Mr. Thomas to Normandy to retrace his steps during the Normandy campaign. Thank you Norwood Thomas for donating your artifacts to The Gettysburg Museum of History, and Happy Birthday! www.GettysburgMuseumOfHistory.com #101stAirborne #NorwoodThomas #DDay #PurpleHeart #GettysburgMuseumOfHistory See more

On exhibit at The Gettysburg Museum of History. A Japanese sword picked up on Mount Suribachi during the flag raising on Iwo Jima. U.S. Marine Frank Rohacek was part of the party who was with Joe Rosenthal who photographed the flag raising. He was one of the snipers who covered the flag raisers. Frank Rohacek picked up this sword during the trek up the mount. Rohaceck rode in a parade with flag raiser Rene Gagnon as pictured. The sword went through a flood and it damaged the blade and handle. A fascinating artifact from one of the most memorable events of WWII. www.GettysburgMuseumOfHistory.com #IwoJima #USMarines #GettysburgMuseumOfHistory
