The Elmore County Historical Society has just launched their fundraising campaign for the Ma Brown Dogtrot and the Sewell Cabin on this #GivingTuesday! Established in 1971 with a mission to collect, record, and preserve the history of Elmore County, the Society was instrumental in the establishment of our museum. Your donation is great way to support to ongoing preservation efforts in downtown Wetumpka - plus these cabins are practically in the museum's backyard! Consider m...aking a donation in honor of a loved one or making a donation as a Christmas gift for the history buff in your family! #ECHS #saveourcabins #wearehistory #wecantogether #thisplacematters #historicpreservation

What it is? Called Conquistador stirrups these stirrups have two different suggested histories. The first, and less likely history, implies these stirrups were taken to South America when it was first colonized by the Spanish in the 16th Century. This could possibly be true except there have never been any of these stirrups seen in paintings during that time nor have there ever been any found in shipwrecks. The second, more likely history, leans toward the lesser know...n use of the term Conquistador which is charming, as in a man conquering the ladies’ hearts. It is certainly a romantic image to think of a finely dressed man riding up to the lady of his choice, looking dashing in the saddle and these stirrups to cover his shoes. Apparently there are two versions of these stirrups. The Conquistador stirrups are supposed to have been made from melted church bells and have a nice ring to them when thumped. The other, slightly plainer model was made from melted down cannons by the troops of the Emperor Maximilian, making them a few hundred years younger. "About Conquistador Stirrups." There is only one man, add the Times, in the state who could have written the resolutions, and he once represented the fifth district in congress. His name is withheld, and so these...Continue reading

Guess what Public Works put up last week?! It's our Alabama Historical Commission Lock 31 marker! We're so thrilled to have this on the state's register of land...marks and heritage and appreciate Craig Sheldon and Joe Allen Turner's help as Executive Director Jenny Stubbs created the verbiage for the plaque. You can see it at the top of the hill above the historic lock. #wearehistory #weareconnecting #wearewetumpka See more
