Remembering Pearl Harbor

23.10.2020

Today’s flyover honoring WWII Veteran William H. Bill Olson who lived to be 100 years old. Bill was a lover of history, music, and nature. He was an artist, photographer, graphic designer, small business owner, and a graduate of Art Center School of Design. Bill joined the USAAF and became a Signal Corps photographer and cinematographer. He worked on many training films and filmed combat missions in the Pacific from the nose of a B-25 bomber. He also flew in the reconnaissa...nce version of the B-29 and filmed some of the first reconnaissance missions over Japan. Our thoughts to the family and gratitude for Bill’s many contributions. Thanks to Marc Sandall for his memories and shared experiences; and to Estrella Warbirds Museum pilots: Eagle 1 - Mike Fitzsimmon (Lead and US Navy Veteran) flying a Cessna 182; Eagle 2 - George Marrett (Right wing and US Air Force Veteran) in the Stinson L-5E; and Eagle 3 - Wayne Rice (Left wing and US Marine Veteran). The planes flew a missing man formation over the Cayucos-Morro Bay Cemetery overlooking the Pacific. A fitting tribute to a gentleman who was proud to serve our country. #centralcoast #wwII #veteran #artist #onewhomadeadifference #remembrance #estrellawarbirdsmuseum #militaryaviationhistory #flyover #honoringthosewhoserved See more

Estrella Warbirds Museum Board advisor and Veteran test pilot George Marrett flew his Stinson L-5E with Board member John Couch and took aerial photos of the museum for an updated site map of our expanding campus. EWM staff, Chief Operations Officer Scott Stelzle, President Rob Kinnear, and Board Member Ron Brooks did a great job repositioning the aircraft for visitor engagement in our airfield plan. On the airfield watching pilot Sherm Smoot in the T-28B Trojan doing a low fly-over at Estrella Warbirds Museum before coming in for a landing. Sherm served in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot and flight instructor in Vietnam flying F-4 Phantoms and Lockheed S-3 Vikings with VF-21 Fighter Squadron 21. He is pilot of the Gooney Bird Group’s C-47B that traveled to Normandy last year and participated in the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Sherm is a star of the Reno Air Races doing aerobatics, and is currently on the EWM Board of Directors, of which he is past president. Time to say bye bye to our M2A1 halftrack. She is going back to her original collection for awhile. What should we put in her place in the Pfauter Building? Ideas anyone?

Special Thanks to our VIP guest Chuck Reuter who brought some TLC to our 1962 Lockheed TF-104G Starfighter (USAF). Chuck began his career at Reedley College in the Aviation Maintenance Program working in coop with NASA that continues to offer training for aeronautical engineers at universities including Purdue and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He worked at Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA as a summer hire during the pinnacle of testing for many aircraft of the era. Chuc...k provided maintenance of C-47s and F-104s, and served on the flight line. He notes, "The F-104 was used in flight proficiency for the pilots and chase for different experiments, as it was extremely fast and could keep up with any project that was flying with the exception of the Blackbird." The TF-104G Starfighter is a single engine supersonic interceptor aircraft, which later became widely used as an attack aircraft. The aircraft, with a rate of climb at 48,000 ft. per minute approaches 1,600 mph full afterburner at 17,500 lbs of thrust. It was originally developed by Lockheed for the US Air Force, but became widely used by US allies around the world and produced by several other NATO nations between 1958-2004. The Starfighter served as a trainer for German pilots out of Luke AFB, Arizona, and was assigned to NASA Dryden Flight Research Center Edwards AFB where it was used in safety tests and as a photo plane for pilot proficiency. It also trained one of the instructor pilots, Chuck Yeager. Reuter adds that the F-104 was a special aircraft and could get off the ground with a couple AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles on the wings to shoot down whatever was approaching as a threat. Check out Chuck Reuter's work on EWM's TF-104G Starfighter on your next visit to Estrella Warbirds Museum.
