SOFO's Annual Decorate a Holiday Tree for the Birds. December 12, 2020
Tomorrow at 10:30am, it's time for SOFO’s Annual Decorate a Holiday Tree for the BirdsA Family Workshop! Feeding wild birds in winter is especially important in our area, where development has removed a good deal of natural winter food resources for local birds. Join the SOFO staff in a holiday tradition and make bird-friendly decorations for a holiday tree using seeds, dried fruits, and some surprising additions. You’ll also be able to make some of these treats to take home and use as decorations on your own holiday tree for the birds. Bring a shoebox to take home some of your decorations.

Wednesday at 4pm: join us for "Horseshoe Crab Connections: Implications For The Medical Use Of Horseshoe Crab Blood In The Development Of Covid-19 Pandemic Vaccines." Did you know the Horseshoe Crab’s blue blood provides the only known natural source of an endotoxin detecting chemical called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) that has long been used in every laboratory around the world to test for bacterial contamination in human medicines?
Tomorrow at 10:30am: Exploring Sharks Through Their Form and Function, with Greg Metzger! This presentation will teach participants about the similarities and differences among a wide range of sharks found in the North Atlantic. You’ll have an opportunity to see, up-close, various jaws, skin samples, and shark fins.
Tomorrow, Thursday, at 7pm, join us for "The Hamptons Observatory: The Great Conjunction & Other Celestial Events." This year, Jupiter and Saturn will meet in the closest conjunction in approximately 400 years, merging almost into a single point in the evening sky of the winter solstice. You won’t want to miss this sight, nor the other splendid opportunities for winter stargazing, from Orion’s brilliant nebula to the Geminid meteor shower.
