By 1921, 825 Sailors had lost their lives due to submarine accidents or sinkings. LCDR Charles Swede Momsen wanted to do something about it after a failed rescue attempt of the USS S-51. In 1926, Momsen proposed the idea of a diving bell, which worked and was later introduced to the Navy in 1930 as the McCann rescue chamber. #OTD 1982, the nuclear powered USS Ohio (SSBN 726), first Trident-Class submarine, returns from its first deterrent patrol. Ohio is the lead ship in a class of ...18 ballistic missile submarines. For the first 21 years of her service, she conducted strategic deterrent patrols. In late 2002, she underwent a three-year conversion into a guided missile submarine.
