Click the link https://www.foam.org//book-launch-afterlife-by-vasantha-yo to learn more about the live stream. ABOUT AFTERLIFE... Afterlife is the sixth chapter of Vasantha Yogananthan’s long-term project A Myth of Two Souls inspired by the epic tale The Ramayana. Drawing inspiration from the imagery associated with this myth and its pervasiveness in everyday Indian life, Vasantha Yogananthan has retraced the legendary route from north to south India. A Myth of Two Souls is informed by the notion of a journey in time and space and offers a modern retelling of the tale. ''Where there are two people looking at each other and there’s an exchange of energy, it can be an exchange of power but also of other things. There's separation but there’s also a connection through a certain kind of energy.’' Quote by Alec Soth. This became the metaphor for photographer Alec Soth in his way of photographing people. Soth used space as another way to overcome the distance that inevitably exists between photographer and photographed. Photographer Alec Soth used space as another way to overcome the distance that inevitably exists between photographer and photographed. While windows and doors create a sense of detachment in the photographs, they simultaneously mark a point of entry from the outer to the inner world. The result is an intimate and often introspective image; a photograph like a daydream. Come and see Alec Soth I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating at Foam until 6 December 2020. ... Remsen Wolff’s work went largely unnoticed during Wolff’s lifetime. Wolff going by the name of Vivienne ‘Viv’ Blum towards the end of his life - died of a morphine overdose in 1998, a time when the pronouns 'they', ‘them’ and 'their' were not yet used as non-binary indications of gender identity. We do not know how Wolff would have like to be addressed in 2020. Conversations with models and others who knew the artist indicate that during a 40-year career, the photographer w...ent under the name Remsen Wolff and that the pronouns 'he' and 'him' were used in the immediate surroundings. Alex Bakker will outline a history of the trans community in the Netherlands in the 90s, highlighting how visual rep...resentation has been influenced by the media and changed over time. Did you already visit the exhibition Alec Soth - I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating? Thank you Odile Con E. (@odilecone) for sharing this image of the work Monica, Warsaw. About the exhibition: The images of Alec Soth's series are the result of a personal search in which the photographer slowed down his work process and turned the lens inward. Instead of focusing on a place or demography, he concentrated on individuals and their private settings. Unlike many of... Soth’s previous visual narratives, the choice of geographical location was not preconceived, but the result of a series of chance encounters. Come and see the exhibition I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating until 6 December at Foam. #alecsoth #foamamsterdam #magnumphotos #photography #amsterdammuseum #foam #introspective #personal #privatesettings See more
The photographs of Magnum photographer Alec Soth have been compared with poetry. His photo series lack a clear linear narrative. The series title I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating is derived from the 1917 poem The Gray Room by Wallace Stevens, in which subtle and superficial observations lead one to suspect fiery emotions below the surface. As in Stevens’s poem, Soth’s portraits and still-lifes suggest an inner life that is as rich as it is unreachable. OUT NOW - Foam Magazine #57: In Limbo. Order online or start your subscription here: bit.ly/FMinlimbo In Limbo reflects how we are experiencing the two main topics of our time a global pandemic and social challenges while looking at how this could be a fundamental chance to shift our questions on photography: stop asking ‘what photography is’ and start consciously talking about ‘what photography can do’ and ‘what we want photography to do’. ... The contributions in Foam Magazine #57 offer both written and visual reflections on these questions, while opening much needed discussions around photography’s power and its responsibilities in a climate of crisis.
