Happy 61st birthday to acclaimed American architect and artist Maya Lin! As a 21-year-old undergraduate at Yale in 1981, Maya Lin's design was selected for the ...Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, beating out 1,441 other competition submissions. Her famous memorial features a black cut-stone masonry wall with the names of 58,300 fallen soldiers etched into its face. The American Institute of Architects has ranked it as number 10 on their list of America's Favorite Architecture. Lin, who continues to work today as an architectural designer and artist, also designed the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama among many other works. UPDATE: Do to poor weather conditions, this aerial review will now take place on Oct 8. LRAFB 65th ANNIVERSARY | Little Rock Air Force Base aviators are schedu...led to perform an aerial review of the greater Little Rock area to thank Arkansans for their unwavering community support for more than 65 years. The formation will be led by a vintage C-47, and include heritage painted aircraft representative of each of the tactical airlift components that comprise the Home of Herk Nation. Since Little Rock AFB first opened its gates on October 9, 1955, the greater local community has extended unparalleled support to our Airmen and their families. Little Rock AFB would not exist as it does today had the community not purchased the land it donated to the Air Force for the base in 1952. #ThankYou *All viewers are encouraged to follow strict physical distancing guidelines and refrain from gathering in large viewing* #LRAFB65 | #HerkNation | #weARstrong #19thAirliftWing | 314th Airlift Wing - Little Rock AFB | 189th Airlift Wing Arkansas Air National Guard | 913 Airlift Group

October 1917 was a momentous month in New Zealand's military history with two successive battles, each with very different outcomes. The first, a comprehensive... victory and the second, New Zealand's darkest day in war history. On 4th October 1917, the New Zealand Division took part in the Battle of Broodseinde, successfully capturing a part of the Broodseinde Ridge called Gravenstafel Spur. New Zealand soldiers helped to extend the front line eastwards and took 1100 German prisoners in the process. The success achieved at Broodseinde however mistakenly led the British high command to assume that the German resistance was weakening. The next advance on 12 October 1917 on the Passchendaele Ridge was disastrous for the New Zealanders. Heavy rain turned the landscape into a muddy bog rendering artillery support useless. New Zealand troops pushed forward only to discover German concrete pillboxes and barbed wire intact, tragically resulting in over 2,700 casualties in one day. Today across Flanders Fields there are numerous memorials dedicated to remembering the sacrifice and service of the New Zealand Division. For more information see New Zealand engineers resting in a large shell crater at Spree Farm following the First Battle of Passchendaele, 12 October 1917. Alexander Turnbull Library Reference: 1/2-012935-G Soldiers from the 4th Infantry Brigade trudge through the rain on the road back up to Gravenstafel Spur, 13 October 1917. Over 1200 4th Brigade men, along with other New Zealanders from various Divisional support and headquarters units, came forward that day to help clear the congested aid posts and dressing stations and bring in wounded still on the battlefield.
