It's Friday the 13th ! You'd think it was just another day at the deep space tracking station, until you turn around and look out your office window at the 70 metre antenna dish standing outside... ...and then you see this!... We know that spiders can be big in Australia, but this is ridiculous. #FridayThe13th #SpaceMenagerie
About 2.5 months to go before the upgrades to Deep Space Station 43 are complete. #DSS43 One by one we are commissioning each of the systems and performing precision pointing calibrations for the antenna's 70 metre wide, 4000 tonne moving structure. #DSS43 #nasa #space #science #dsn #csiro #canberra #mars #dss43 #astronomy #planets
Great news everyone! Deep Space Station 43, the only dish in the world that can send commands to @NASAVoyager-2, has re-established contact with the spacecraft after an 8-month hiatus while the antenna has been undergoing an upgrade. #DSS43 CSIRO #csiro #space #science #voyager #nasa #jpl #universe #interstellar #spacecraft #voyager2 #exploration #streetsign

The calm before the storm. A rain and electrical storm approaches the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex over the hills of the Tidbinbilla Ranges. The antennas have lightning protection and are well-grounded in the event they are ever struck. The massive cloud had an ominous dark base and thunder could be heard rumbling as it approached.... #Canberra #weather #storm #clouds #DSS43 #lightning #space #science #nasa #jpl #csiro #antenna
While Deep Space Station 43 has been undergoing upgrades, there have been extended periods when the antenna remains upright. During these times, rain water collects in the subreflector dish at the top of the antenna. When the dish is then moved in elevation, the water comes out pouring over the dish surface and creates a waterfall effect. This elevation tip happened as a storm was also passing through the area. The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is a part of NASA's... Deep Space Network and is managed in Australia on their behalf by CSIRO, Australia's national science agency. #Canberra #weather #storm #clouds #wind #clouds #waterfall #antenna #nasa #jpl #csiro #space #science
As a storm was passing over the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, lightning flashed in the nearby hills. The video shows it at normal speed and then in slow motion to capture the action. The antennas themselves have lightning protection and are well-earthed, so even if they are struck, we can keep on operating. It's a busy time for the #SuperbBlueFairyWren. Lots of territory to watch over, babies to feed and females to court. #SpaceMenagerie #birdwatching #birdwatchingphotography #birdsofinstagram #science #space
Deep Space Station 36 (foreground) and Deep Space Station 35 (background) are both in communications with @OSIRISREx and we are currently receiving data from the spacecraft's high gain antenna. #ToBennuAndBack Dare we say "Pics or didn't happen!" ... #space #science #nasa #jpl #csiro #asteroid #bennu #landing #samples #canberra #antenna #dss36 #dss35
