Goodbyes can be difficult...even more so when there will never be another hello. Nat, we will always miss you. Your wit and humour; your kindness and compassion; your knowledge and wisdom. I know my life is so much the better for the time you spent in it. Helensville Museum will not quite be the same without you. Our committee meetings will be a little less. Rest now, your pain is gone, and know your smile lingers here in your absence.
Can you help? Baur Media are shutting down their NZ portfolios, which means iconic mags which have been in our homes since the 1930s will be gone forever. Listener (1939) and Womens Weekly (1935) are a big part of our history...we would like to have the final copies in our collection. Can you donate one (or two!) of these final mags? Please get in touch! Do you have a vintage copy that needs a new home? Please get in touch!
Got littles that you walk with? Needing to get some air? Are you taking part in the ‘bear hunt’? While sorting out an urgent issue at the museum, I took the opportunity and added a little friend to the window in the office. You can see Agatha Rowen (see if you can work out what that is an anagram of!) from the carpark by the dog park.
Kia Ora koutou. I hope you’re all staying safe and in your bubbles! We’ve had a question from someone who believes that her father built the old classrooms at Helensville Primary School. Do any of you live in Rimu St or nearby where you could walk past the school on your daily walks and see the back of the old classrooms? We’d like a photo taken from Rimu Street looking uphill at the old classrooms - getting as much of the back in as possible. If you could share that with us on this page that would be awesome. Take care out there!
The Helensville A & P show of 2020 is almost upon us. We have a few items for sale at the show this year...beautiful kauri trays made from wood salvaged from the courthouse floor are $35. Books : men came voyaging and pioneering woman of South Kaipara are $25 each, or both for $40. There will also be centennial editions available. So be sure to come and meet us, and maybe join as a volunteer!
Hey community! Loving the sun but wouldn’t we all love a little rain more? We need to ask your help again. We are on the hunt for old newspapers (preferably pre 1970 - unless it has a world changing event on front page such as 9/11, the Berlin wall dropping or perhaps the death of Princess Diana)...old sheet music...old movie posters, vintage books or vintage ephemera. Even vintage (empty) food packaging or tin can labels! These would become part of a permanent fixed display..., adhered to the wall of our almost finished new object storage, preservation and conservation unit. We really need to have them fairly soon as the project is almost at the wall covering stage and we are on a tight schedule to be finished If you have any that you’re happy to donate, please get in touch and become part of creating something truly interesting and unique. Don’t forget we have water still being offered free. Check the post for updates on days/times. Have a great week. See more
Water....we all desperately need it to survive and to maintain levels of health and hygiene. And in this heat, more so. Helensville Museum will continue to offer free water filling until the need subsides. You can fill anything up to 1000L, and we are not limiting the quantity of fills. If you need it, you need it, no questions asked. Fills are available at any time the museum is staffed. This is for security purposes. I will endeavour to up date this post daily as to when t...hat is. ***Tomorrow (Friday 21st 8.30am to 10am, longer if needed) **** PLEASE check on your neighbours, especially our older folk, and young families. We are trying to work out a way to provide outreach to our vulnerable community members. We are actively working with the emergency management team to find solutions. A 10,000L static tank will be in Helensville soon. If you are desperate for help, even help just to get hand carry sized bottles, please get in touch via messenger and I’ll do my best to get you help. Communities supporting each other! See more
Very recently the museum was broken in to. And we want to say THANK YOU to the thieves. You’re probably wondering why we would say that...seriously...have the museum staff taken leave of their wits?? Not at all. Without these people breaking in, we would not have known where our weak spots were...and now not only do we know, but they’ve been remedied. Our security company came up with solutions that mean both our shipping containers and each of the tool sheds are as protec...ted as the rest of our site. Which, by the way, has a brand new, state of art alarm system (we’ll tell you all about our upgrades in a different post!). Police were notified at the time and forensics attended the scene. This time of year there are far more people of ill intent wandering around. Don’t give them opportunity to relieve you of your belongings so close windows when you’re not home...lock your vehicles at night...make sure you lock up when you head out....and don’t leave valuables unsecured. Be neighbourly and aware...if you notice something out of the ordinary, call the police. See more
Check this little dude out! His name is Luca Wheeler-Hughes and he’s driving a custom rod created by his very doting grandad William Wheeler. William spent 4 months on this epic car for Luca, with everything being designed and fabricated by him and attached to a base car (a cozy coup). Luca looked very comfy in his car and fitted right in at the car show. We think grandad William is pretty clever, and that Luca definitely had the cutest kid car on the block. When you have a real life mystery on your hands, a moment that makes you stop and stare, and just say....wow! Helensville Museum has a fence fairy! We’ve needed to repair our fence for a very long time, but it was way down on our list of chores...with our focus on pest management and weather proofing because they’re vital. But today we discovered SOMEONE has come and repaired our fence for us! Every broken picket has been replaced around the entire fence line!! (There were q...uite a few) And they didn’t breathe a word to us about it. We believe it has occurred today because while we were working inside Hedley House we thought we could hear rather loud hammering but put it down to the enthusiastic reno work being done at the cottage next to the grounds. And, well, because the new pickets are rather obvious... So, to our fence fairy...thank you! We would very much like to know who you are so we can thank you properly. If you think you know who is responsible, please let us know. We are hugely grateful for the efforts. It all looks stunning! See more
Looking forward to the classic cars this weekend!!! https://facebook.com/events/500682840502781/?ti=as
