Saving storefronts Historic commercial buildings are integral to many downtown corridors. Storefronts, which play a critical role in advertising merchandise an...d brought us the phrase window shopping, are a character-defining feature of many of these buildings. Historic storefronts can be found in nearly every Idaho community and often feature large display windows with recessed entries and canvas awnings that provided customers a reprieve from the elements. The storefront in the U.S. has evolved over time in response to the availability of materials such as cast iron, canvas or wood canopies, aluminum and stainless-steel framing, transoms with pigmented structural or tinted glass, and neon. While American storefronts have their origins in the mid-19th century, the evolution of modern materials beginning in the 1920s and 1930s continued to influence commercial design through the mid-century. The National Park Service provides guidance for rehabilitating historic storefronts in Preservation Brief 11. Some important steps are the identification, retention, and preservation of the storefront, and its functional and decorative features. Before Sun Valley Resort opened up the Warm Springs side of Bald Mountain, there was the Guyer Hot Springs Resort. Built by a Civil War captain, it attracted Am...ericans from all over wishing to emulate the European experience at such spas as Baden Baden. An elevated bridge crossed Warm Springs Creek, ladies wore 16-button gloves as they danced in the pavilions and men swam in the buff while ladies splashed around in pantaloons. Eye on Sun Valley’s Karen Bossick and Ketchum historian John Lundin take you to the site, which once housed a lavish two-story lodge, in today’s Eye on Sun Valley video.

What a wild two days it has been. We want to send a huge thank you to everyone that supported the museum yard sale over the last two days. It was a huge success and we could not have done it without you. Thank you to all the volunteers that spent their early morning on Friday to set up and late Saturday evening to box things up. All our volunteers spent 23 hours each working the yard sale and it definitely paid off. Thank you to all those that donated items and shopped with us. It means a lot and we appreciate all your support. Now it’s time to sit back and rest for a little bit.
