In 1990 these shoes were worn by CH Man On The Town, Five-Gaited World's Grand Champion in 1989 and 1990 for Oak Hill Farm. He followed in the footsteps of his sire CH Yorktown and grandsire CH Wing Commander, also Five-Gaited World's Grand Champions.
January is a great time to start a book. Here is a young adult book from our library collection called "Bluegrass Champion: Harlequin Hullabaloo" by Dorothy Lyons and illustrated by Wesley Dennis. Published in 1949, the yellow jacket cover really depicts an action packed story. The inside front jacket text reads: "The smell of tanbark, the thrilling cry of "Rack on," and the exciting rhythm of four hoof in perfect cadence fill this dramatic story about the five-gaited sho...w horses of Kentucky. To everyone else but Judy, her gaudy pinto, with spots "louder than a Christmas necktie," seem clownish compared to the state's finest Saddlebreds. Even after Matt Ross, the famous trainer, agreed that Harlequin might have a chance to win the Grand Championship for Bluefield Farm, neither Judy's sister nor the horse-show judges could see the horse's perfect form for his spots. Despite Judy's faith and hard work, it seemed a hopeless situation until--in a tense climax--an unexpected emergency gave her the chance to prove Harlequin's caliber to a breathless audience."

Today is #VeteransDay. We thank all veterans and faithful military animals for their service. This is the cover of the magazine, "The Rider and Driver" from November 9, 1918. During World War I, each issue included an article about horses in the war effort. Cover image: "Allies" By Tolman Print Inc, Brockton, Mass.
The Museum is mourning the loss of a dear friend, Joe Jackson. (July 24, 1934 - October 12, 2020). Joe Jackson was born July 24th, 1934 in Maryville, MO to Joseph (Joe) F. Jackson, Jr and Helen Baker Jackson. He grew up there, where he played basketball and ran track at both Maryville High and then Wentworth Military Academy, in Lexington, MO. In 1952 he enrolled at the University of Missouri where he enjoyed being rush chairman for his fraternity Beta Theta Pi. In 1956 he ...Continue reading
Thinking about Kansas City? So are we! Here is a great program from the American Royal from 1981, the cover really stands out. The horse and rider have that perfect autumn feeling riding behind a background of trees with a warm glow. Inside the program tells more about the cover. The picture was reproduced from an original painting by Danny Whitehead. Titled "Dress Rehearsal," the painting was judged best out of 100 paintings entered in the American Royal Program Cover Art Contest. Best of luck to all the competitors this week!
Beauty and elegance are two words that describe CH Belle Elegant, perhaps the most aptly named World’s Grand Champion. She was famous for her flowing mane and big personality. She also had a companion goat named Baby! This amazing mare won the Five-Gaited World’s Championship in 1975 with trainer Jack Nevitt and in 1977 with trainer Edward Teater. This photo shows her with Edward Teater up. Photo: Sargent.

Did you remember to set your clock back one hour last night? Here is a look at CH Duke of Daylight, fine Harness Champion. This photograph's inscription says that the horse: "Retired from the Fine Harness division in August 1973 after winning over 100 Blue Ribbons at the major horse shows including 6 consecutive Ladies' Stake Championships at the Kentucky State Fair."
You might not be doing much prowling this Halloween. But here is a horse we love, CH Night Prowler driven by John Champagne. Night Prowler was born in 1972 and is out of Empire's Lady Genius by Status Symbol. He was the winner of multiple World's Championship titles and was named UPHA Fine Harness Horse of the Year in 1975, the youngest horse to receive the honor at 3 years old. He went on to sire multiple champion horses, but made a come-back to the show ring at the age of 10 winning two World's Championships!
