Thinking that the one Udall tornado postcard I posted with the date 1909 was a typo, I had a very kind reader research further and found this article. Udall did had tornado damage in 1909 although it not destroy the town like the one in 1955.

When I first saw these postcards my first thought was "why would you want to send these" due to the grim subject. Then I remembered that back then not everyone got newspapers, TV was mostly local and of course there was no internet. Therefore how do you let others know about the terrible tragedy you experienced except to put pictures on postcards and then mail them to families and friends.

I had a reader ask where Baden Mill and Dam were located. I think I have part of the answer but not all. According to a 1912 city directory Baden Roller Mill was located at 8th and Millington. The first and last photo would be at that location. The very bottom (last photo) on the back of the photo says that it was originally Bliss and Wood Mill before becoming Baden. The second photo shows the Mill on the Walnut but I'm not sure where. Maybe at Ninth and the Railroad tracks or it could further downstream, possibly by Tunnel Mill. Hopefully someone will have more information. Thanks, Janet Hostetter.

I had a reader contact me and shared these pictures. The top two stones of this fireplace, acting as a mantel, were from a school in Atlanta. Isn't that a great way to preserve history. Janet Hostetter.

More lion pictures

06.09.2020

THE LIONS ARE BACK IN TOWN. I'm hoping that most of you remember the Caton Lions that were in front of every home that Bill Caron lived in. These lions were carved by Harry Caton, Bill's grandfather in 1888. They have been in storage with the city and now are on display in front of the museum. The photos show the sequence of getting them set up. City employees, Tim Nihart and Sam Tapia, Walter Nichols, Gary Leaned and Thomas Lee helped in getting them set up.
