Faces of Hope - Sir Nicholas George Winton Nicholas Wertheimer was born on May 19, 1909 in West Hampstead, London. His parents were both German Jews, who converted to Christianity and later changed the family name to Winton. In December 1938, Nicholas skipped his planned ski vacation in order to travel to Prague. There he met his friend, Martin Blake, who helped Jewish refugees at the time escape the country. Nicholas realized that war was imminent and decided to help despera...te Jewish parents get their children out of Czechoslovakia. He established the Czech-Kindertransport and the first train to leave Prague with hundreds of children was on March 14, 1939. In total Winton was able to rescue close to 700 children with his Kindertransport before returning home to London. Nicholas never spoke of his miraculous efforts until in 1998, his wife, Grete, found photos of the saved children in their family attic. In 2002 Czech TV aired a special called, The Power of Good: Nicholas Winton, and in 2003 Queen Elizabeth knighted him as Sir Nicholas George Winton. Winton passed away on July 1, 2015 at the age of 106, but he will always be referred to as the British Schindler for being a humanitarian hero. https://youtu.be/CbiX0sh5KqQ Help us in the building of the Center for Hope, Humanity and Holocaust Education. https://azjhs.org/Capital_Campaign.php #cpjhc #AZJHS #events #arizonajewishhistoricalsociety #gallery #jewish #history #education #heritagecenter #phoenix #arizona#film #culture #nonprofit #imageofhope #imagineacommunityofhope

Faces of Hope-Tauba Weiss Tauba Weiss was born in Lask, Poland on January 25, 1926. Throughout her childhood, Tauba had to deal with anti-Semitism from the Polish kids she grew up around. After the Nazis invaded Poland on September 3, 1939, the Weiss family was sent to the Lask Ghetto. Tauba worked as a tailor during this time making uniforms for the Nazis. In 1942, the Nazis came to the Lask ghetto and Tauba’s mother and six siblings were sent to the Chelmno concentration ca...mp to be gassed. For Tauba, her father, and brother, they were taken to the Lodz ghetto, where she worked as a shoemaker. In 1944, Tauba was transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau for a year before again being transferred to the Stutthof camp. Her next stop was the Dresden ammunition factory where Tauba made bullets. She was liberated on May 7, 1945, and later married Morris Weiss that same year. The two moved to California in 1951 and later she reunited with her father and brother in the United States. Tauba Weiss, a Holocaust educator, has three children and six grandchildren. Today, marks the 80th anniversary of the Declaration of War by France and the United Kingdom on September 3, 1939, after German forces had invaded Poland. World War II began in Europe and French and British forces would soon be in battle. Come visit the AZJHS to learn more about one extraordinary British military officer, Leonard Berney. He helped liberate thousands of Jews from Bergen Belson and became the commanding officer of a Panzer barrack in town that would be turned into the largest hospital in the world. #cpjhc #AZJHS #events #arizonajewishhistoricalsociety #gallery #jewish #history #education #heritagecenter #phoenix #arizona #film #culture #nonprofit #imageofhope #imagineacommunityofhope
