Rocamadour, also known as the vertical village in France, is a marvelous balancing act. Built into the cliffside on successful levels it clings high above a canyon. Its historic houses, roofs and churches seem to be a part of the rock itself. There are 216 steps in total, once climbed by pilgrims on their knees. #neart #nebraskaart #VisitNebraska #neartscouncil #humanitiesne #nebraska #kearneynebraska #unkearney #art #artist #museumfromhome #museumcollections #museumofnebras...kaart #nehcares #supportthearts #haveyoubeen #hiddengem #honestlyne #rocamadour William Schlaebitz "Rocamadour Encounter" watercolor, n.d. Stanislas W.Y. Schimonsky immigrated to the United States in 1848 after graduating from the Polytechnique School in Berlin and serving in the engineering corps of the Prussian Army. He was a surveyor in Nebraska as well as an artist. A bit of an inventor, he received a patent (the second oldest patent in Wyoming history) for an improved railway car brake while working as an assistant engineer on the Transcontinental Railroad. #neart #nebraskaart #VisitNebraska #neartscounc...il #humanitiesne #nebraska #kearneynebraska #unkearney #art #artist #museumfromhome #museumcollections #museumofnebraskaart #nehcares #supportthearts #haveyoubeen #hiddengem #honestlyne #transcontinentalrailroad #wyominghistory Stanislas Schimonsky "The Omaha and Ottoe Mission at Bellevue. What do you think? Is this ceramic piece by artist Dee Schaad earthenware or stoneware? Here's a hint, stoneware has a texture, earthenware is smooth texture. The textures of both types can be smooth or coarse depending on how much grog (wondering what grog is now?) has been added. Stoneware is made from a particular clay which is fired at a higher temperature which results in a more durable material, with a denser, stone-like quality. The finished product will be waterproof ...and unlike earthenware, does not need to be glazed. #neart #nebraskaart #VisitNebraska #neartscouncil #humanitiesne #nebraska #kearneynebraska #unkearney #art #artist #museumfromhome #museumcollections #museumofnebraskaart #nehcares #supportthearts #haveyoubeen #hiddengem #honestlyne #earthenware #stoneware #ceramics Dee Schaad "Along the Platte Valley" ceramic, n.d. The earliest recognizable form of screen printing appeared more than 1,000 years ago in China during the Song Dynasty. Originally used for commercial purposes in the early 20th century, the technique would be termed serigraphy in the 1940s to differentiate its use for fine art. Silkscreen Printing is ideally suited for bold and graphic designs. #neart #nebraskaart #VisitNebraska #neartscouncil #humanitiesne #nebraska #kearneynebraska #unkearney #art #artist #museumfromhome ...#museumcollections #museumofnebraskaart #nehcares #supportthearts #haveyoubeen #hiddengem #honestlyne #screenprinting #serigraphy #silkscreen Michael H. Indisputably the most internationally known living Nebraska artist and one of the world‘s most renowned fiber artists, Sheila Hicks was born in Hastings, Nebraska in 1934. For eighteen months Robert Hanna put his architectural career aside to drive back and forth across Nebraska. He logged fifteen thousand miles through all seasons and weather. He ducked tornadoes and braved snowstorms to draw barns, bridges, depots, storefronts, mansions, courthouses, churches, band-stands, ballparks, and other monuments to the human proclivity for building. The resulting drawings and watercolors are a celebration of spaceslittle spaces, really. "Set down a ...towering county courthouse in the middle of a wide Nebraska horizon, and even government looks mighty small," writes Hanna. #neart #nebraskaart #visit_nebraska #visitkearney #neartscouncil #humanitiesne #nebraska #kearneynebraska #unkearney #art #artist #museumfromhome #museumcollections #museumofnebraskaart #nehcares #supportthearts #haveyoubeen #hiddengem #roberthanna #roadtrips Robert Hanna Untitled (house) watercolor, n.d. Anyone remember paper dolls? Paper dolls have been around as long as there has been paper, perhaps hundreds or even thousands of years by some estimates. Women of leisure tended to be the women featured in paper doll form. As more women began to enter the work force in the twentieth-century, paper doll manufacturers began to produce dolls that represented career women. #neart #nebraskaart #visit_nebraska #visitkearney #neartscouncil #humanitiesne #nebraska #kearneynebraska #...unkearney #art #artist #museumfromhome #museumcollections #museumofnebraskaart #nehcares #supportthearts #haveyoubeen #hiddengem Mary Elizabeth Gifford "Stylish Paper Dolls" graphite, ink, ink wash, watercolor, 1943 Gift of Charles Gifford, Museum of Nebraska Art Collection

Abraham Lincoln got his first job at Denton Offut's general store in New Salem, IL. There Lincoln spent much of his time not making sales, but educating himself. Weaving is an amazing craft which utilizes beautiful wooden tools: looms, shuttles, frames and more. These tools are works of art in and of themselves, and even more incredible is the fact that they have been around since the same time our ancestors were developing stone tools- around 10,200 BC. #neart #nebraskaart #visit_nebraska #visitkearney #neartscouncil #humanitiesne #nebraska #kearneynebraska #unkearney #art #artist #museumfromhome #museumcollections #museumofnebrask...aart #nehcares #supportthearts #haveyoubeen #hiddengem #weaving #weavers #loomart #fiberart Mary Sue Gaer "Untitled (weaving)" wood, wool, c. 1970s 1980s Gift of Larry Schulte & Alan Zimmerman, Museum of Nebraska Art Collection
