This video is a moving tribute to Covington County's war dead. It reminds us that freedom is not free. A great sacrifice was paid by these people who gave all, laying down their lives for us.
FYI...need a project to do while staying in uour home? Research your family history.
Mrs. Agnes lived 104 years, if I recall correctly. I met het at Savannah Terrace Assisted Living when she was about 100.. Her favorite hymn was "Blessed Assurance."
Sue Bass Wilson, our Covington Historical Society Vice President and Historian, writes a weekly column on Saturdays in the Andalusia Star-News. Here's her column in the March 28, 2020: https://www.andalusiastarnews.com/2020/03/28/312247/
From Sue Bass Wilson: This message is to let you know that our March meeting of the Covington Historical Society is postponed until further notice. You will be notified when we all know more. In the meantime, you may be aware, too, that the library is closed as well. We should all stay tuned to the local, state, and national news for updates on the situation.... In my Remember When column that appears in The Andalusia Star News, you may read about last week's article on the Flu Pandemic of 1918. This week will be about the Polio Epidemic of the 1950s along with a local connection. It is posted on FB sites, andalusiastarnews and suebasswilson. Be sure and complete your 2020 Census form. I noticed that there was no question asking about one's "occupation." As I was looking at Ancestry.com this week, it was interesting to read about one of my great great greats. His occupation (Harvey Gordon Mathis) was a "Keeper of the Livery Stables." His father was a farmer. I was telling my children and grandchildren that that occupation back in the 1800s was very important- similar to an "auto repair shop" or "car dealership" today. Horses and mules were a necessary part of life back then - for transportation and work on a farm. Stay safe. Keep busy and productive with something interesting and know that we will miss seeing each other for a while. Our meetings and programs are always eagerly looked forward to by those of us who love preserving and publicizing history. You may still send 2020 dues, memorial contributions, or honorary contributions to CHS, P. O. Box 1582, Andalusia, AL 36420.
The February meeting of the Covington Historical Society will be Thursday evening, Feb. 27, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. at the Charles Dixon Room of the Andalusia Public Library. Please bring any old maps or deeds relating to our town's or county's history to SHOW and TELL about. We have located a few and we will share this with the group present. Don't forget that it is time to remit your 2020 DUES as a society member or friend of the museum. Even if you are not able to attend every meeting, your support and encouragement is needed as we continue to preserve and publicize the history of Covington County. CHS, P. O. Bod 1582, Andalusia, AL 36420.
From time to time, people contact The Three Notch Museum via private message on our Facebook page. Here's a question we recently received. Does anyone have any answers? I have in my possession a cast iron commode that was removed from some Florala property many years ago. The commode was mounted in an outhouse by itself. On the lid of the commode is the name Peerless Fndy.Co, Andalusia, AL. I believe this would stand for Peerless Foundry Co. I understood from someone ...that a government contract was given to this company by the Works Progress Administration. Do you have any history on the Peerless Foundry Company in Andalusia? The only thing I could find that was even remotely connectable was the name of W. J. Foley, a 1905 horse shoe maker. He was the owner of Peerless Grate Bar Co. in Andalusia, AL. Peerless could have gone to that name after the WPA was no longer in use. Does anyone have any information on the Peerless Foundry Company, or the Peerless Grate Bar Co.?
