While underway to the Persian Gulf, the crew of the Mighty Mo held the Persian Excursion Basketball Tournament using the ship’s lone basketball hoop. The 16-team 3-on-3 tournament was played on December 2, 1990 and 30 years ago the ship’s newspaper The Missourian reported the results: The Tarheels (led by GMG3 Tyrone Combs, GMGSN Francis Hill and SN Lawrence Diamond) held on to beat the tenacious Silenters (who consisted of BM3 CHarles Albert, SN Daniel Blaine and SN Eric Frye) 10-8. Each of the victors were presented with a ten-dollar gift certificate to the ship’s store. There was one casualty as a result of the tournament: a Spalding Magic Johnson basketball went overboard - one of the challenges of playing on a moving court.

30 years ago today, the ship’s newspaper The Missourian reported the opening of the Mighty Mo’s Computer Learning Center. It was the first of its kind on a US navy ship and was created to teach the crew how to use Macintosh and IBM-compatible computers. Eight Macintosh computers and two laser printers were installed in the classroom at a cost of $30,000. Sailors were also taught how to use MoNet, the battleship’s onboard computer network and one of the first of its kind aboard Navy vessels. MacIntosh and Zenith computers were placed in offices and work centers, with QuickMail software installed so that offices could communicate via e-mail rather than paper memos. MoNet had 100 MB of storage space available with 100 MB of additional hard disk storage.

Can you belive its November? but also Did you Mo... about the Killer Tomato? Live-fire gunnery practice is the most effective way for the US Navy to keep our sailors proficient with the operation and maintenance of their respective weapon systems. But what do you fire at when you’re surrounded by a flat, featureless ocean? Killer tomatoes, of course! These red or orange inflatable targets with a menacing nickname would be dropped in the water to give sailors a clear object t...o aim at during gunnery exercises. The Mighty Mo made soup out of many killer tomatoes during her service in the 80s and 90s. #USSMissouri #BattleshipMissouri #MightyMo #Navy

As a follow up to the Navy Day celebrations the day prior, the Mighty Mo moored in Manhattan on October 28, 1945 to give the public a chance to tour the famous surrender ship. It is estimated that USS Missouri had nearly 350,000 visitors over the next week and a half. The throngs of excited visitors left their mark on the ship, both literally and figuratively. Many bulkheads were marred by graffiti and everything that wasn’t tied down disappeared. Photo Caption: The Missouri (BB-63) with her name painted amidships, which was done during this period right after the war ended but only for a short time around Navy Day.
