Behind the scenes just before Lockdown 2, our team carefully storing away some of our aircraft into the main hangar

02.11.2020

Sadly after last night’s government announcement, today will be our last day of opening for a while. To everyone who has visited us, thank you for all your kind words and social distancing skills, it’s really appreciated. We will be opening again just as soon as we are able. Meanwhile, we’ll be right here in our social channels. Stay positive, this is temporary, not forever

25.10.2020

Half term will soon be over. Before they go back to school, you still have time this weekend to explore our aircraft before we begin to hibernate our more fragile exhibits next week.

23.10.2020

We're half way through half term week! Have you visited us yet? Here's our Gannett. A nose full of propellors, two engines joined together, a fat tummy and fold away wings. But everyone loves her.

22.10.2020

It's been wonderful to see so many people visiting the museum this summer. Thank you to everyone for all your care over social distancing, Don't forget we are still open from Wednesday to Sunday each week and our parkland setting is the perfect place for some fresh air.

21.10.2020

Winter sun at the museum. It’s been an amazing year and it’s a shame we cannot be open. Thank you to everyone for all of your social distancing skills and for visiting this summer. We will be back soon.

20.10.2020

Even after 75 years under water, the Tall Boy bomb was still capable of exploding. If you have ever wondered what the inventions of Barnes Wallis looked like, we have real Tall Boy, Grand Slam and a replica bouncing bomb here at the museum.

17.10.2020

Look behind you Gibson Bear. Everyone has heard of our Halifax Friday the 13th. However many visitors don’t realise that the other side carries French Air Force markings, maintaining the memory of the Squadrons that flew from here in wartime.

05.10.2020

It’s the weekend and normally we would be saying please come and visit! Sadly we are closed for now as part of Lockdown 2. So here’s a picture of our beloved Control Tower - or Watch Tower- in the sunshine yesterday. We hope you are all well and we will see you soon.

04.10.2020

We are so thrilled to announce that the #CultureRecoveryFund has awarded the museum 312,53. This will help us to cover some of our essential costs over the coming winter and ensure the true security and future strength of the museum. You can read more details here

Where’s Wally? This half term we have a special trail to follow. Created by Kids in Museums, be sure to collect yours and discover Wally to solve the puzzle

25.09.2020

For those Yorkshire days when the sun doesn’t shine, we’ve made you some extra under cover seating for snacks and picnics. And for the hardy souls, there’s one last chance to see our Dakota outside before winter hibernation after half term.

23.09.2020

When you visit the museum this half term, look out for our new QR Codes around the museum. Ever wondered what a Dakota or Mirage Jet looks like inside? Scan the code beside the aircraft to see

18.09.2020

What are you doing this weekend? We'll soon be moving our more vulnerable aircraft indoors, so it's a good chance to see all of them outdoors before we move them for winter time. Don't forget you can pre-book online too.

18.09.2020

Socially Distanced Halifax Hibernation. Now there’s a phrase you don’t see every day. Here’s how the museum team parked our aircraft neatly inside the main hangar recently.

15.09.2020

Here at the museum, we take care of the forerunner to this aircraft, our Nimrod XV250. For the future pilots out there who may be reading, take a look at the new Poseidon MRA1 at it's new home in Scotland. Could you be flying this one day?

12.09.2020

Gibson Bear has been having a clear out with our team. We have a lot - and we mean a lot - of plastic chairs available for free to a good home. There are several hundred that are being replaced and we don’t think it’s a good a idea to try and recycle them. If there are any worthy causes nearby who would like some, please contact our office at [email protected] or call us on 01904 608595

On the week that all of the Halifax bombers departed in 1945, it’s probably a good time to share this of our miniature Halifaxes. You will find them around the grounds of the museum when you visit this half term

It's looking like rain this weekend, so wrap up warm and bring a brolly. Here's a throwback to summertime and our Halifax outside in the sunshine. This weekend when you visit, you'll find her warm and dry inside the main hangar.

On this day in 1945, the French Squadrons here at RAF Elvington finally began to return to their home in liberated France. This blog by Paul Bogaert of the Groupes Lourds Association takes us behind the scenes on that momentous time https://yorkshireairmuseum.org//the-french-squadrons-home/

FRIDAY AM - We are receiving a lot of phone calls this morning about the sad accident on the neighbouring airfield yesterday. Most calls are asking if we are open as normal and indeed we are. Our friends next door who own and operate the airfield are helping to deal with the aftermath of the accident and we send our best wishes to everyone affected.

Did you know that on this day in 1916, No 77 Squadron was formed? 77 Squadron were RAF Elvington's very first residents in WW2. You can read more about the very first days of the Squadron on the association's website right here

Especially for those weekends when the weather is changeable. We always have a few puddles to jump in. Let’s face it, everyone loves jumping into a puddle, don’t they?

07.07.2020

We had some distinguished visitors at the museum this weekend. The Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride is an international charity who's normally splendid efforts at fundraising had to be scaled down this year. So instead, four riders made a socially distanced visit to the museum. We do agree, they look rather distinguished...

It's looking like it just might be a warm weekend. Time to book some fresh air and sunshine? Our E Ticket system is optional, however more and more of our visitors are finding out how easy it is
