We're delighted to be included in this fabulous Yankee Magazine feature! Special thanks to Deb Cohen for her photography skills and eye for detail! Fun fact - that pineapple you will see above the Webb House door is real! https://newengland.com//the-12-doors-of-christmas-deb-coh/
Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all. Stanley Horowitz

Our Witches and Tombstone Tours are sold out, so this week in Everyday Living at WDS Cindy shares historic tales of Wethersfield witchcraft! We begin with an uncanny coincidence: WDS guide and educator Will Conard-Malley is a seventh-generation great grandchild of Gershom Bulkeley, whose decision in a local witchcraft case was a literal lifesaver! We’ll explain Bulkeley’s role in a moment. First, we begin at the beginning of the Wethersfield witchcraft cases, which preced...Continue reading
Wow, this week in Around the Grounds we see great progress being made in the new Education and Visitor Center! Here you see books in the Welcome Center Shop; the new kitchen being stocked; the elevator ready to go; and the Welcome Center front desk, which boasts a wall monitor to highlight news and events! Can you tell we’re excited? Collections A-Z - U is for Union Blocks! The WDS toy collection includes examples from the late 18th through early 20th centuries and includes dolls, games and other amusements. As the 19th century progressed there was a shift away from handmade to manufactured toys. As noted in an earlier column (E is for Elephant), toys could also include an instructional component. One example is a box of Union Blocks found in the toy display in the Stevens house. Manufactured in Ger...many in the early 20th century, the architectural forms allowed a child (and, according to the box apparently adult, too) to build miniature structures. The cover artwork is reminiscent of A. C. Gilbert products like Erector Sets or American Flyer electric trains which featured families gathered around educational playthings. Curator Rich Malley notes that this set reminds him of the Lincoln Logs and American Bricks of his own 1950s childhood, or perhaps the Duplo and Lego systems so popular in recent decades. However, Union Blocks differ in one particular waythey are actually quite heavy, a molded mixture of quartz sand, chalk and linseed oil! Don’t try tossing one of these pieces at a pesky siblingthat would hurt! We were charmed by the adorable thank-you notes sent to guide and educator Tammy Denease for a recent Witch of Blackbird Pond Tour! Great job, Tammy!
Some very engaged homeschoolers took our "Child Life," "Cow," and "Textiles" hands-on-history classes yesterday! Code, Caleb, Cole and Nathan really enjoyed the hoop rolling! If your homeschool group or "pod" is interested, see our programs here https://webb-deane-stevens.org/the-museum-school/ and email Cindy Riccio at [email protected]!
