On January 5, 1916, this portrait was taken of Detroit firefighters posed with a new Seagraves pumper engine, which was put into service that day. On December 11, 1911, the Detroit Zoological Society was organized. This 1912 certificate signifies the life membership of Edwin S. George in the organization and notes that it was founded for "Establishment of a Zoological Park and the Preservation of Wild Animal Life."
On December 10, 1914, James J. Brady conceived the idea of Old Newsboys collecting for the Goodfellow Fund to ensure "No Kiddie without a Christmas." The organization continues its work to this day, and a statue honoring Brady stands on Belle Isle.
On November 10, 1975, the ore carrier S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior near Whitefish Point, killing all 29 sailors on board. Tonight, we honor them and other sailors lost on the lakes in our 21st Annual Lost Mariners Remembrance, taking place virtually on the Dossin Great Lakes Museum page at 7 p.m.

On November 9, 1912, the sidewheel passenger steamship S.S. Seeandbee was launched at the Detroit Dry Dock Company. Many workmen are shown here standing along the taffrail of the ship and a large crowd of onlookers can be seen on the dock in the foreground.
On November 8, 1924, this view of Michigan Avenue from Campus Martius was captured. An electric streetcar with a sign that reads "Cyril Maude" approaches, as two early automobiles cross its path. The Majestic Building, housing the Central Savings Bank, is on the immediate right.
On November 7, 1957, the John C. Lodge Freeway was dedicated. The Lodge was built in segments during the 1950s and 1960s and is pictured here ca. 1955.
