We love the story Kevin Llewellyn tells about how visiting The Butler as a child influenced his life. His self portrait now hangs in Beecher court, drawing "oohs" and "ahs" from visitors. In October of last year, the unveiling of this large painting kicked off The Butler's next 100 years!

The late painter, Clyde Singer (1999) was born on this day back in 1908 in Malvern, Ohio. He studied at the Columbus Art School until he won a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York City. His breakthrough show was in 1935 at the National Academy of Design and the Whitney Museum of American Art. From 1940-1999 Clyde was a curator and assistant director of The Butler, where he also taught art classes. he also became an art critic and columnist for the Vindicator. I...n his lifetime, he painted more than 3,000 works of art, mostly oils, specializing in everyday urban life set mostly in New York City and Youngstown. He participated in at least 500 shows, was awarded over 40 prizes, and had more than 50 one-man exhibitions. "Clyde Singer's World", a selection of most beloved paintings from The But;er's Singer Collection are on view now through January 3, 2021. See more
