A Chance for the Unpredictable On November 29, we will celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of Lianzhou Foto festival and the opening of the Museum’s winter exhibitions. This year our guest curator for the Theme Exhibition is Swiss Foundation for Photography's Director Peter Pfrunder . Under the title 'A Chance for the Unpredictable', we will present 24 exhibitions exploring the uncontrollable aspects and the unpredictable elements that leave their traces on the photographic... image. Photography is closely linked to the idea of control, it is often about carefully composing images, adjusting camera settings, staging simulation of reality in the studio in an attempt to ward off the unexpected. In contrast, the photographers featured in the theme exhibition explore the tension between controlling the image and capturing the unexpected, between conscious perception and the unseen. Their work embrace the uncontrollable unpredictable happenings as part of the beauty, the poetry and the magic of photography. Golden week started with some Game play for the young audience of LMP. Kids were invited to participate in a drama workshop exploring the themes of borders and property around the exhibition ‘Stupid Borders’ by Artist Rubén Martín de Lucas. For a day the exhibition’s central installation became the land of an imaginary kingdom and a limitless playground for the kids of Lianzhou. Following our Fall Exhibitions Little Adventurer guide, the family and kids of Lianzhou set off on a treasure hunt, looking for details and uncovering stories behind the artworks. Little adventurers left with their hands full of little art pieces of their own, souvenir stickers from the exhibition of Zhao Qian ’A Field Guide’

LMP FALL EXHIBITIONS On August 31, the exhibition ‘A Field Guide’ by Chinese Artist Zhao Qian will open at Lianzhou Museum of Photography. Frequently flying between San Francisco and Shanghai, Zhao Qian experienced cultural displacement, travelling back and forth, from one spotless airport to the other, saturated with flattened screens, global signs and language. ‘A Field Guide’ gathers these elements from the contemporary visual landscape and strips them of meaning by pull...ing them out of context, displacing and distorting them. In this confusion of his own devise, Zhao Qian compiles an imaginary field guide with infinite paths to be roamed. LMP Fall Exhibitions August 31 - November 11 ‘A Field Guide’ Zhao Qian
LMP FALL EXHIBITIONS On August 31, the exhibition ‘The Visible Woman’ will open at Lianzhou Museum of Photography, presenting two projects from the American photographer Haley Morris-Cafiero that explore the act of reflection in photography. ‘Wait Watchers’ forces us to confront our reliance on models of temperance as guides and our own capacity to exclude. And in ‘The Bully Pulpit’, she faces cyber-bullying head-on, parodying its animosity. She imitates her detractors, fla...unting their insults and, in doing so, turns their hatred around. Her performance is an approach where the "I" is not a "refusal of the self", on the contrary, it is the affirmation of an individual, social and artistic stance. LMP FALL EXHIBITIONS On August 31, Lianzhou Museum of Photography will present ‘Burning Sun’ an overview of fifteen years of photography by Chinese photographer Wang Yishu, guiding us through his ordinary yet unfamiliar scenes. Wang Yishu once worked as one of the top photojournalists in Chinese media. This allowed him to travel across China, from metropolitan cities to remote villages, capturing images along the way. While the media’s focus was on pursuing clear stor...ies with affecting narratives and striking effects, Yishu’s interest lay in exploring daily mundane situations and how they conveyed the complexities of China’s reality. LMP FALL EXHIBITIONS On August 31, Lianzhou Museum of Photography will present ‘Stupid Borders’ by Spanish Artist Rubén Martín de Lucas as part of its Fall Exhibitions program. ‘Stupid Borders’ is a set of conceptual projects that questions the idea of "nation and points at the strange feeling of possession that man exerts towards the Earth, an entity which transcends us in age.... In the series ‘Iceberg Nations’, Rubén Martín de Lucas and his team board on several icebergs to equip them with nationality and flag. This project was made in Greenland choosing, among the ancient glaciers dating back to over 20 thousand years old, the icebergs ready to dilute and disappear. In the series ‘Minimal Republic’, the artist choses a 100 m2 space outlined on the ground, located with GPS coordinates and with its own specific time period, inhabited by a human form. Republics whose limit always responds to an artificial criterion that is geometry, whose duration never exceeds 24 hours and whose only inhabitant is the artist himself. The results of these actions are ephemeral microstates" exploring the intangible nature of nation, a mental construct present only in the collective imagination but which nevertheless play a central part in all state violence and all forms of government.
