Waking the beast ! The North American B-25 Mitchell is a medium bomber that was introduced in 1941 and named in honor of Major General William 'Billy' Mitchell..., a pioneer of US military aviation. Used by many Allied air forces, the B-25 served in every theatre of World War II, and after the war ended, many remained in service, operating across four decades. Produced in numerous variants, nearly 10,000 B-25s were built. These included a few limited models such as the F-10 reconnaissance aircraft, the AT-24 crew trainers, and the United States Marine Corps' PBJ-1 patrol bomber. Video : @lyonairmuseum See more

Power Flite - In January 1957, the 98th Air-Refueling Squadron found itself on temporary deployment at Harmon Air Base, Newfoundland. Nothing out of the ordinar...y, as eastern Canada was becoming a pivotal forward base for bombers based in the United States. What was extraordinary was its participation in Operation 'Power Flite'. Three B-52s of the 93rd Bomb Wing at Castle Air Force Base, California successfully attempted a 'round-the-world' flight that flight commander Major General Archie Old remarked as a 'routine training mission'. It's goal was to prove the true global reach of the Strategic Air Command. KC-97s of the 98th provided fuel over the northeast so the B-52s could continue on towards Morocco, Saudi Arabia, India, the Philippines, Guam, and back to California. Photographs of KC-97s refueling B-52s are somewhat rare and the more capable KC-135s would soon overshadow their propeller-driven fore-bearers. KC-135s however would not begin to enter SAC service until June 1957. The crews of the three aircraft were each awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by General Curtis LeMay himself when they landed, and the 93rd Bomb Wing would receive the Mackay Trophy for 1957.
