Gilbert was part of the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm in the 1950s. He flew Tiger Moths, Harvards, Seafires and later the Meteor. Today he describes landing a Seafire on an aircraft carrier. Kieth Webb

Ian trained at 1 EFTS, Parafield and then at 7 SFTS, Deniliquin on Wirraways. After further training on P40s at 2 OTU he was posted to 84 Squadron based at Horne Island. He then went to 75 Squadron flying P40s in Biak and Noomfor, and finally at Morotai. HIs story today is about being hit by anti-aircraft fire whilst strafing enemy positions at Utaron. Fortunately he landed safely.... Kieth Webb

Huck was a Mirage pilot who was selected as a Forward Air Controller during the Vietnam War. He flew the O-1G Bird Dog for the first three months in support of the 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong Delta, later moving on to fly the OV-10 Bronco. Huck describes flying both the Bird Dog and Bronco and the suitability of each type for forward air control. Huck vividly describes his experiences in action which led to him being written up for a Silver Star which was eventually c...onverted to a DFC. : Keith Webb

Harry did his initial training at Somers and was posted to Rhodesia for flight training. He gained his wings on Harvards. Harry was then posted to England for further training on Masters followed by Hurricanes and Typhoons. He was sent to India and joined 615 Squadron flying Spitfires. The squadron was posted to Palal in the Imphal Valley where they operated against the Japanese. ... With only about 16 operational flying hours, Harry destroyed two bombers in an attack on a Japanese formation on one sortie. Whilst most of their operations were low level attacking troops and trucks Harry also downed a Japanese Oscar fighter. Harry left the RAAF in December 1945 with the rank of Flying Officer. : Keith Webb

Colin joined the RAAF post WWII. He was one of the last to train on Tiger Moths and Wirraways at Uranquinty. His first operational posting was to 25 Squadron at Pearce where he flew one of the last Mustangs before they were sent to Tocumwal for scrapping. He converted to Meteors with 25 Squadron at Williamtown and to Sabres with 3 Squadron.... His story today is about flying the Mustang to Tocumwal. : Keith Webb

Behind the scenes in Engineering this week. annual inspection is near completion. The last step is carrying out fuel calibration, before the engine runs begin. annual inspection continues.... Preparing the , , , and for currency flights. Currency flights to be carried out on Friday & Saturday. The Vibration Analyst arrives Monday, so we are going to make the most of his presence! Not only will he be carrying out vibration tests on the engines, but he will also be checking propeller balance on a number of RAAF Historic Flight aircraft. It is with great sadness that we notify you of the passing of a much loved member of the Temora Aviation Museum family. Sandy Simmons, wife of Wing Commander Paul Simmons (RAAF), and mother to Leah and Dan, passed away on 18th November after a short illness, in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Simmons family during this challenging time. ... Sandy has been part of the team here since 2009, and she has always been a huge help whilst Simmo was flying. Her smiling face and bright & bubbly personality will be missed. Rest in Peace Sandy

Ron enlisted in 1942 and gained his wings at Wagga. Ron was sent to England where he flew Hurricanes. He then moved on to North Africa flying Spitfires with 152 Squadron RAF and during the campaign through southern Europe. Ron was finally posted to Burma. ... Today Ron talks about almost bailing out of his Spitfire three times when the engine cut. : Keith Webb

This week in engineering The annual inspection continues- with three engineers currently working through this process. The annual inspection begins.... Yesterday a pre-flight check was carried out on the Hudson for its scheduled fly past over the Shrine of Remembrance today, to commemorate Remembrance Day. Unfortunately, due to severe turbulence en route and over the Shrine, we were unable to participate as planned, so we've included the video of last weeks Hudson start-up, before it headed to Williamtown. Here's what you'll hear 1 The whirring sound of pre-oil pumps, pumping the oil pressure to 30-40 psi prior to engine start. This ensures the engine is properly lubricated and is a modification to preserve the engine. The process can take 1-2 minutes 2 Motoring over the engines, one at a time, to check for hydraulic lock, which is an oil build up in one or more of the cylinders, which we definitely don't want!! 3 Engine start up- music to our

The is being reassembled after the rectification of a pneumatic leak in the pressure regulator and release value. ... Minor repairs are being carried out on the . Pre-flight checks on the , which is heading to Williamtown (weather dependant) on 2 November to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the disappearance of the Canberra Bomber "Magpie 91" on 3 November. Mike joined the RAAF in 1955. He trained at Uranquinty on the last course on Tiger Moths and Wirraways. He finished his training at Point Cook and was posted to 24 Squadron at Mallala flying Mustangs. Mike was sent to learn to fly Vampires and convert to Sabres at 2 Operational Conversion Unit, Williamtown.... Posted to 3 Squadron he served in Butterworth, which was the first RAAF overseas deployment since the Korean war. Mike also flew the Sabre operated by the Temora Aviation Museum in service during his time in Butterworth. : Keith Webb

On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July, they helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens... in August, followed by the capture of Mont St Quentin and Pèronne, and the breaching of German defences at the Hindenburg Line in September. By early October the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle. They had achieved a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, but victory had come at a heavy cost. They suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. We are so excited for Showcase this weekend , but that means a busy week for our engineers with preparation! Most of the participating aircraft from the RAAF Historic Collection haven’t flown in nearly 12 months, so the team will be conducting thorough pre-flight checks, with currency flights to be carried out on Friday. In addition, the annual inspection has begun, which will take a couple of weeks to complete.... As part of the annual inspection on the , a visual check identified a cracked head & bank hold down nut , which will be replaced this week. See pictures attached. During these annual inspections, the engineers look for problems that might cause issues down the track, and the need eyes like a to spot them!! The team also hope to squeeze in a post annual inspection engine run.

UNSUNG HEROES: RAY LITTLEY Ray joined the RAAF in January 1949 as an apprentice. He spent his first three years training as an engine fitter at Wagga before being transferred to Richmond in New South Wales. He applied for a posting to Japan and was subsequently sent to Korea, working with 77 Squadron on Meteors. ... His story is about working on Meteors with 77 Squadron in Korea. : Keith Webb

John was a Spitfire pilot who trained at Narromine and Uranquinty. He was posted to England and after further training was sent to Malta to join 243 Squadron. Whilst there he shot down at least two German aircraft. One of three Australians on the squadron he was the only one to survive the war. His story is a poignant one about the effect the war had on him personally after he returned home.... : Keith Webb

Jim 'Paddy' Nolan was a pilot who trained at Temora. After gaining his wings in Canada on Harvards he was posted back to Australia where he converted onto Wirraways and Boomerangs. His operational posting was to 5 Squadron in New Guinea in an Army Co-operation role based at Torokina. ... He flew the Museum’s Wirraway on an operation in extremely bad weather to drop a Storpedo with supplies for our troops. Today Jim shares the story of this trip and a near miss which occurred. : Keith Webb

Another busy week ahead in Engineering! The annual inspection continues. This is taking longer than usual as the team is replacing ALL airframe flexible hoses and couplings, and access to some areas is particularly tight! A new large fuel line has been ordered. Once it arrives it will be replaced, and the fuel tanks refitted to the aircraft The annual inspection is well underway. An exhaust coupling is cracked, so we are in the process of getting quotes... for the 321 series Stainless Steel required to manufacture a replacement (this is very hard to come by). Once we've partially manufactured the part, it will be sent to a licensed Aerospace Welder to work his magic! We have received a Service Bulletin stating that the undercarriage pintle attach studs need to be replaced on both . These parts are currently being manufactured in Great Britain. The Avionics Specialist will be able to cross the border next week, so he will be headed straight to the Museum to work on the , and the Vibration Analyst has been booked for the first week in December

Many would say that R.J. Mitchell was the biggest single contributor to winning the Battle of Britain. We'd love to hear what you think. In 1916, before the age of 22, R.J. Mitchell went to work at Supermarine Aviation Works in Southampton, where he remained for the rest of his life, serving as the company’s director for his last 10 years. He designed seaplanes (used largely for racing) between 1922 and 1931 and by 1936 had designed and developed the Spitfire, (more than tw...o dozen versions of which were eventually created before and after his death), which was known for its aerodynamic sleekness and manoeuvrability. Mitchell was battling cancer. Despite this, he continued to work, not only on the Spitfire, but also on a four-engine bomber, the Type 317. He also took flying lessons and got his pilot's licence in July 1934. In 1937, Mitchell gave up work, although he was often seen watching the Spitfire being tested. Mitchell went to the American Foundation in Vienna for a month, but died on 11 June 1937 at the age of 42. He was a passionate and devoted man to his work on Spitfires. : R.J. Mitchell

. This Gipsy Moth is the oldest registered flying aeroplane in Australia, and is owned by friends of the Museum, David and Carolyn Salter. Right now you can find it in the Display Hangar at Temora Aviation Museum.... This aircraft has had a colourful life, including being used by test pilots and flying instructors (DH-192) as shark patrol (VH-UAE) and in military service for the RAAF (A7-88). Des joined the RAAF in October 1942 with initial training at Bradfield Park. He was posted to No. 8 Elementary Flying Training School at Narrandera where he battled to overcome air sickness. After gaining his wings at Uranquinty, Des spent a short time as a staff pilot, flying Wackett Trainers before being selected for fighter training on Boomerangs at Mildura.... Posted to 83 Squadron he was involved in convoy protection work from Millingimbi and later on Gove. Today, he describes the loss of one Boomerang while engaged in fighter affiliation. #UnsungHeroes #Veterans #OurStory #AustralianStory
