In accordance with a resolution by the Berlin Senate, the Helmut Newton Foundation at the Museum of Photography will again be temporarily closed, from November 2, 2020 until further notice According to Matthias Harder, the Director and Curator of the HNF, I very much regret the renewed closure of museums in Germany, because I consider much of our diverse and impressive cultural life to be quite systemically relevant. Exhibitions, concerts, stage plays, and films are not just... for enjoyment by the few, but are a source of inspiration for almost everyone in this country. Culture is not an elitist luxury. Still, the cultural industries must also make their contribution to combating the pandemic. I hope that we will be able to welcome visitors from Germany and abroad to the Helmut Newton Foundation again in December. We will keep you informed of new developments, and thank you for your understanding. Stay healthy. Photocredit: Steven Kohlstock

The French actress Catherine Deneuve plays a similar role in front of Newton’s camera as in Belle de Jour, the scandalous, award-winning, surrealist film by Luis Buñuel from 1967 with costumes by Yves Saint Laurent. Nine years later, Deneuve again slips into the role of the seductress, her open and defiant gaze directed straight at the camera. Almost as if she is looking into a mirror, she appears examining and self-controlling. With her thumb she appears to pull down her sil...k lingerie even lower, while a strap has already slipped from her shoulder. The scene captures a subtle and provocative sense of frivolity, without being in any way offensive or vulgar. The combination of exhibitionism and voyeurism, of intimacy and distance, often leads Newton as we see here to the image of the femme fatale. The reduction and abstraction of reality through the photograph’s black and white print allows us to easily imagine it as a scene from a film noir classic. What is unusual is the relatively narrow framing of the protagonist cutting off her forehead at the upper edge of the picture. The effect is an intensification of her expressive and self-confident gaze out of the photograph, onto the viewer. The image was taken in 1976 for Esquire magazine. At first glance, it is unclear whether it is a fashion shot or a portrait, which is not unusual for Newton’s images. With playful ease, he repeatedly transcended and overlapped genre boundaries. Later, Newton included this image in various publications and exhibitions, and it now counts among one of his iconic images, embodying the ambivalent and enigmatic aura of Catherine Deneuve in its purest form. Before the weekend hits and we are starting with our campaign on "HELMUT NEWTON ONE HUNDRED, on view as of October 31st on Köpenicker Straße 70, Berlin-Kreuzberg, we would like to share another iconic image by Helmut Newton with you! Helmut Newton, Liz Taylor, Los Angeles 1985 "The magazines love portraits like this one of Liz Taylor. This is how many fans imagine their Hollywood favorites to be: a bit stylized perhaps, but beautifully dressed in a luxurious setting. Helmut N...ewton satisfied these wishes perfectly, but always added a little salt to the soup. In this image, Liz Taylor is shown in her garden in Los Angeles, reclining elegantly on a padded, metal chaise longe. Her chin tilts up, giving her expression a touch of arrogance. In 1985, the 53-year-old Oscar-winning actress could look back on a four-decade career in Hollywood, which had a somewhat sluggish start. At the time of the photograph, though, she was rarely working in the movies, let alone for major studios like MGM or Paramount. Instead, she used her celebrity status to support AIDS research, among other humanitarian activities. And so Helmut Newton shows us Taylor as a film star from bygone days, looking somewhat tired and bored with money and fame. She appears in a much different light, and much less approachable, than Catharine Deneuve in Paris, for example. The gesture of her right hand and the general style of this celebrity shot seem somewhat old-fashioned, like a scene from the grand old days of 1930s Hollywood; a white fur coat is draped over the back of the chair. Yet her presence in front of the camera remains uncontested, and transforms even a simple garden scene into an almost classical stage situation. Newton portrayed Liz Taylor several times on commission for magazines both in black and white and color. Only two years later, his even better-known color portrait of her served on the cover of his book Portraits. There she stands against the wall of the pool at her estate in Bel Air, with a presumably stuffed green parrot perched on her right hand, her bare shoulders above the water, her wet hair slicked back, with red lipstick and light make-up, wearing a diamond necklace and large earrings to match. The surface of the water doubles her perfect face and precious jewelry, as if a reflection of her acting success. At the edge of the pool behind her is a director’s chair with Elizabeth Taylor embroidered on it more staging and star cult are hardly possible. Text. Today we continue with our re-introduction of some of Newton´s icons. The following image was taken for "Amica", in Milan in 1982. "Helmut Newton loved the atmosphere of luxurious hotels and staged dozens of his iconic photographs at them, including this fashion shot for Italian Amica in 1982. Two models dressed in black, knee-length cocktail dresses are pictured in a plain and elegant room. One of the models sits on a classic red fabric sofa. She seems to be in the process o...f fastening or unfastening the stiletto sandal of the other woman, who stands with one foot on the sofa in a challenging pose. Her slender legs are quite muscular, a characteristic that Helmut Newton often emphasized with set light. In a film made by June Newton in 1995 about her husband, we see the couple at Newton’s studio in Paris discussing two print versions of a life-size nude; a particular focus of their lively conversation is the visibility of depicted model’s leg muscles. As we learn there, this aspect as a symbol of women’s strength and power seems to have been of utmost importance for the photographer, much more than the superficial eroticism of nudity. During those years Newton often worked with Arielle, the model on the left. She also posed for him for a number of nude photographs. Incidentally, her hairstyle is the same as June Newton’s at the time. The photograph for Amica was taken one year after Newton’s famous series Naked and Dressed and Big Nudes, which marked the transition from fashion to nude photography in his work. In this case, we are witness to either a friendly gesture or an intimate situation, depending on our personal interpretation of the scene. This ambivalence has been a special aspect of Newton’s work since the 1970s, when he was able to convince his female models to hug or kiss each other in front of his camera a great challenge for magazine makers and their audiences at the time. Those productions at the latest earned Newton his reputation of being a naughty boy. Just as Brassaï, whom Newton admired, often depicted lesbian couples in Parisian cafés of the 1930s, Helmut Newton also occasionally played with the illusion of same-sex intimacy and sensuality for his fashion shots. Getting closer to the opening of our big outdoor exhibition "HELMUT NEWTON ONE HUNDRED", we would like to take this opportunity and share some of his icons + a corresponding descriptive text by Dr. Matthias Harder with you. "Helmut Newton, French Vogue, Rue Aubriot, Paris 1975 This fashion photograph, which is now 35 years old, is so timeless and iconic that it still appears today in a wide variety of contexts most recently on the cover of a large survey of 20th century fas...hion photography published by a British publishing house. Newton shot the image for the September 1975 issue of French Vogue, where it first appeared as part of a multi-page editorial with photographs of Yves Saint Laurent’s 1975/76 couture collection. They are all night shots, some in color, some in black and white. The model is always pictured alone on the street, as we can rediscover in Newton’s legendary publication, Pages from the Glossies (1998), with its facsimiles of his magazine publications from four decades. The other fashion shots from this series were not included as part of his own oeuvre. French Vogue, Rue Aubriot, however, was later shown as a life-size print in Newton’s exhibitions around the world. He shot the night scene on a narrow street in the Marais district of Paris, where he himself lived; his house is visible in the background. The model with the dark, slicked-back hair wears a pant suit by Yves Saint Laurent a fashion statement that was revolutionary for its time, and which Newton visualized accordingly in this image. Here, too, a certain ambivalence resonates. In the 1970s, the Marais was known for the prostitutes who presented themselves at night to the gaze of their potential clients. The seemingly aloof protagonist in Newton’s photograph is, on the one hand a very modern, fashion-conscious, and self-confident woman. On the other hand, however, viewers may wonder who she is actually waiting for there, standing alone and smoking. With this enigmatic staging, Newton was also likely referencing the paintings of Berlin by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, which depict prostitutes, smoking at night, awaiting their customers at Pariser Platz. To add a further twist, Newton also took a second picture in Rue Aubriot: one of his infamous Newton versions, which was not intended for publication in Vogue but appeared a year later in his first own publication, White Women. There, a female nude model stands alongside the model dressed in the Yves Saint Laurent tuxedo. The androgynous woman in a suit is transformed into a man in our fantasy, a variation of a motif Newton used for numerous other pictures for French Vogue, featuring two female models dressed in various dresses and pant suits."
